Towel Surfing on Bondi Beach
Media agency Razor, PR firm Text 100 and production company Curious did a great job in planning Australia’s first surprise flash mob performance dubbed ‘Towel Surfing’ on Bondi Beach last Friday.
Smitten with surprise, Bondi Beach-goers stopped and stared when 250 flash mobbers, all in beachwear and strategically placed among sunbathers, got off their towels and starting dancing in unison to a remix of Ben Lee’s new track “Catch My Disease”. The choreographed stunt began at about 2pm and only lasted for about 2 minutes until the dancers collapsed back onto their towels. It was organised as part of the promotion of the new Flip mini video camera, which launched last weekend.
With more than 130,000 views, organisers hope video footage of the stunt will become a viral hit on the web. The video was shown on Saturday’s Today show on Nine and footage will be used in cinema TVCs and POS material as well.
Flash mob stunts have grown to be an extremely popular PR tool, especially in Europe and the U.S. Examples include a video of the Sasquatch Music festival in the US, the telco T-Mobile flash mob in London’s Liverpool Street station or the famous “silent disco” of 2006 where thousands of people across various London Underground train stations danced to music on their own portable music players. With some 4,000 people gathering at London Victoria station this flash mob could easily be one of the biggest one’s organised so far.
