Old Spice Causes a Social Media Frenzy
You may remember the Old Spice commercial that premiered earlier this year, featuring actor and former NFL player Isaiah Mustafa, “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like”, which was touted as one of the best and funniest advertisements of the year.
Well, Old Spice and Mustafa have created even more buzz about their latest endeavour. It began when Old Spice created personalised videos with Mustafa starring as “the Old Spice guy” in response to questions received from Twitter followers. He made videos for the likes of Ellen DeGeneres, Twitter founder Biz Stone, GQ Magazine, and even a marriage proposal. The incredible part is the speed with which he has turned out these videos. In 24 hours, Old Spice has released 116 (and counting!) personalised response videos via their Twitter account @OldSpice and their YouTube channel.
Although some of OldSpice’s videos have been directed towards average internet users, many of the videos have been created for media outlets, websites and celebrities. This has caused the campaign to go viral at an incredible speed.
The videos aren’t the only part of the online buzz storm that Old Spice has created. On the same day as these videos are being created and released, Old Spice is also a promoted trending topic and promoted tweet.
Old Spice has utilised great tactics to create this viral media frenzy over their product – a recognizable figure, well-written copy, personalised content, well-planned timing, and a clever mixture of purchased advertising and other promotions.
