A Social Valentine
It seems that people are spending less money on Valentine’s Day this year and spending more on the web. We know that Valentine’s Day has become a pretty commercial event and that many consider it as commercially driven excuse to sell more products is not a secret. But social media is managing to attract a lot of attention if it comes to Valentine’s Day this year.
Typically, Americans were the bigger spenders during the Valentine’s Day period but this year has seen them spending less. People are spending 5 percent less than they used to. This means less expensive jewellery and less exorbitant presents in exchange for smaller and more personalised gifts. The majority gave personalised cards and gifts, posted via the web services. More than half of the people went out for dinner and it seemed that flowers were also still pretty popular.
This works out to be bad for business for the local jewellery shop, but good for social media. From creating a personalised Facebook ad, to uploading a love song on YouTube, or sending your love-bird a new reason for loving him or her every hour for 24 hours. With social media tools it is all possible. Social media has become perfect channel for Valentine’s Day expressions of love, especially because it is also about connecting people and making the world more social and interactive. First you will contact with friends and others through the web but eventually you will interact with strangers as well.
If you were looking for an original gift it was pretty easy to find this year. You just had to Google ‘Valentine’s gift’ and there were thousands upon thousands of possibilities popping up. Chocolate with your own massage and photo, personalised gadgets, cards, events and many delivery services were selling their stuff on the web. In the old days people were happy with a box of chocolate from the supermarket and a rose from the florist but now there’s a whole new creative and exciting gift catalogue available; so why not use it?
Even for people who always have hated Valentine’s Day there are enough funny gadgets to surprise your ex with, or just buy for yourself. Well you can use social media the way you want, but it is certainly not an excuse that you just couldn’t find the perfect give these days; because everybody knows they are all over the web!
