The Rebranding of the American Dollar

Australians don’t know how good they have it.  Beaches everywhere, strange and wonderful animals, and coloured money.  Meanwhile the U.S. is stuck with the boring old green-backs. American money definitely needs a makeover. But who or what is going to be the catalyst for change?  Who’s going to throw their hat into the new-money-designing ring?

Well Richard Smith, a New York Based fashion designer already has.  Smith, an expert in graphic design who “who specialises in transforming brands into wants and desires” has been campaigning to redesign American money for two years now, because, according to him, the current bills resemble the ears of a female pig.  Smith has started the Dollar Rede$ign Project, where anyone can submit their ideas for a brand new day and newly branded dollars.

Smith received a good deal of attention from the media, culminating in acknowledgement from the White House, which said that its priority at the time was health care.  But now that that’s (somewhat) taken care of, Smith is revving up the works for a second go-round.  He asks the artists of the world to “take up your arms and declare your dissatisfaction and show your support for this very important cause.”

The best part?  Submission is free to anyone and everyone, American or not.  And the award for first place is $500, second and third places receive $100.  So, if you’re artistically inclined, why not give it a go?  You could win some money just by designing money, and, with a large amount of luck, your legacy might change American hands for hundreds of years to come.
